A 1964 New York Times review of the book reads, "This is not the sort of novel that Christopher Isherwood's earlier works have led us to expect of him, and that is surely to his credit, for it is always interesting to see a writer branching out into something radically new rather than trying to live up to a certain kind of reputation." For example, the next time you’re at an event with your partner, imagine how everyone else in the room sees them-as someone unknown to be curious about-and try to see them that way too. Look at them in a different context to your partnership. They might be committed to you, but they’re their own person, and you don’t own them.
